Is your deer meat tough, dry, and gamy? Check out this list of 12 deer-butchering sins to find out why your venison tastes bad — and how to make it better. And so on. I think we eat pretty good. Some things consistently make venison really tasty. And some things will ruin the flavor, too. Here are a dozen of the worst offenders. In the real world of hunting, things happen. We all make bad shots on occasion.
Ever had a glass of good-tasting acid? The faster a deer hits the ground and can be field-dressed, the better the meat will be. The animal is killed instantly, and the meat is uncontaminated by blood and entrails from the chest cavity. That said, head shots are risky. The lungs remain the best place to aim. Internal bacteria rapidly takes over after death, expelling gases and causing the animal to bloat.
This process is accelerated in warm weather. Learn how to field-dress a deer, and get to it ASAP. Removing those organs is the first step in cooling the animal down.
On a cold night — in the mids or lower — a deer can be left hanging skin-on overnight. In especially cold weather, some hunters like to age a deer in such a manner for several days more on aging in a bit. When I find my deer and get it field-dressed, I plan on having it skinned, quartered and on ice within the hour. Modern deer hunters are in tune with deer herd management. Given the chance, most of us want to shoot a mature buck with big antlers.
Me included. Old bucks are perfectly edible but rarely the best. Muscles get tougher with use and stringy with age. Expect chewy steaks. I usually make hamburger, sausage, and jerky out of such animals.
Deer that spend a summer munching on corn and soybeans have an easier life — and more fattening food sources — than those that spend a lifetime wandering the big timber in search of scattered mast and browse. Am I saying to whack every young buck that walks by? The mercury rises above 50 degrees on most days of deer season in my area. I line the bottom of a cooler with a layer of ice, add my deer quarters on top of that, and then cover them with more ice.
I keep the cooler in the shade with the drain plug open and on a downhill incline. The idea is to let the ice slowly melt and drain from the cooler.
The stunning danger of smoking while pregnant
A new study shows smoking even one cigarette per day in pregnancy doubles the risk of a newborn baby dying. Smoking is also known to restrict the blood flow that carries vital oxygen and nutrients between mom and baby. When smoking kills, it can happen quickly. Roughly 3, babies in the US die suddenly every year for unknown reasons.
In a new study in Pediatricsresearchers estimated that if expectant moms would just quit smoking, we could prevent of those deaths. To be more specific, the researchers discovered that any smoking during pregnancy — even a single cigarette — was associated with a doubling of risk of a newborn baby dying suddenly in his or her sleep. So smoking a pack a day triples your risk, and even if you quit by the first trimester, that still results in a 50 percent increase in the risk of sudden infant death.
There were some limitations to the study. For one, the researchers can only describe correlations between the variables they looked at, but not whether one caused the other. SUID is an umbrella term for unexplained newborn deaths. According to the latest data from the CDCin7 percent of women who gave birth smoked while pregnant across the US. For women ages 20 to 24, the pregnancy smoking rate was 11 percent. Some states have shockingly high rates of maternal smoking.

A data scientist colleague at Microsoft, Juan M.Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke is breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Most commonly, the substance used is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant, which have been rolled into a small rectangle of rolling paper to create a small, round cylinder called a " cigarette ".
Smoking is primarily practised as a route of administration for recreational drug use because the combustion of the dried plant leaves vaporizes and delivers active substances into the lungs where they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and reach bodily tissue.
In the case of cigarette smoking these substances are contained in a mixture of aerosol particles and gases and include the pharmacologically active alkaloid nicotine ; the vaporization creates heated aerosol and gas into a form that allows inhalation and deep penetration into the lungs where absorption into the bloodstream of the active substances occurs.
In some cultures, smoking is also carried out as a part of various rituals, where participants use it to help induce trance -like states that, they believe, can lead them to spiritual enlightenment. Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use.
Tobacco smoking is the most popular form, being practised by over one billion people globally, of whom the majority are in the developing countries. Some of the substances are classified as hard narcoticslike heroinbut the use of these is very limited as they are usually not commercially available.
Cigarettes are primarily industrially manufactured but also can be hand-rolled from loose tobacco and rolling paper.

After the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, the practice of smoking tobacco quickly spread to the rest of the world.
In regions like India and Sub-Saharan Africa, it merged with existing practices of smoking mostly of cannabis. In Europe, it introduced a new type of social activity and a form of drug intake which previously had been unknown. Perception surrounding smoking has varied over time and from one place to another: holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar, a panacea and deadly health hazard.
In the last decade of the 20th century, smoking came to be viewed in a decidedly negative light, especially in Western countries. Smoking generally has negative health effects, because smoke inhalation inherently poses challenges to various physiologic processes such as respiration.

Cannabis smoking was common in the Middle East before the arrival of tobacco, and was early on a common social activity that centered around the type of water pipe called a hookah. Smoking, especially after the introduction of tobacco, was an essential component of Muslim society and culture and became integrated with important traditions such as weddings, funerals and was expressed in architecture, clothing, literature and poetry. Cannabis smoking was introduced to Sub-Saharan Africa through Ethiopia and the east African coast by either Indian or Arab traders in the 13th century or earlier and spread on the same trade routes as those that carried coffee, which originated in the highlands of Ethiopia.
Reports from the first European explorers and conquistadors to reach the Americas tell of rituals where native priests smoked themselves into such high degrees of intoxication that it is unlikely that the rituals were limited to just tobacco.
Insix years after the settlement of JamestownJohn Rolfe was credited as the first settler to successfully grow tobacco as a cash crop. The demand quickly grew as tobacco, referred to as "golden weed", revived the Virginia Company from its failed expeditions in search for gold in the Americas. This became a motivator to settle west into the unknown continent, and likewise an expansion of tobacco production. However the practice was revived in with the invention of the cotton gin. A Frenchman named Jean Nicot from whose name the word nicotine is derived introduced tobacco to France in From France tobacco spread to England.
The first report documents an English sailor in Bristol inseen "emitting smoke from his nostrils". At the same time caravans from Morocco brought tobacco to the areas around Timbuktu and the Portuguese brought the commodity and the plant to southern Africa, establishing the popularity of tobacco throughout all of Africa by the s.

Murad IVsultan of the Ottoman Empire —40 was among the first to attempt a smoking ban by claiming it was a threat to public morality and health. The Chongzhen Emperor of China issued an edict banning smoking two years before his death and the overthrow of the Ming dynasty.
Later, the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynastywould proclaim smoking "a more heinous crime than that even of neglecting archery". Religious leaders have often been prominent among those who considered smoking immoral or outright blasphemous. But lighting up a joint inside? Those against the ban argued that it infringed on their rights inside their homes. Kick it for your kids As a psychotherapist, I've worked with many cigarette smokers in their attempts to quit smoking.
Cigarette smoking is the toughest addiction I've worked with, tougher than alcohol, tougher than heroin. I've often counseled smokers to "quit for yourself, no one else, or else you'll never own the victory; the freedom will never truly be yours.
Now I can't think of all these kids who never should have died and still give the same advice. I'm now compelled to say, "Quit so your kids will be healthy, so they'll live! Let's clear the air We at least owe our kids a chance at the healthiest life possible.
